Not Me Monday!!

Welcome to Not Me! Monday! This blog carnival was created by MckMama. You can head over to her blog to read what she and everyone else have not been doing this week.

Ty did not mistake George Washington for a pirate at the music program and yell his observation for everyone to hear.

Nick did not get sick with strep AGAIN. I did not call my parents and ask them if I could move back home because I was sick of sick kids.

Eric did not study his spelling words this week by signing the letters to me rather than writing them down on paper. How cool is that!!

I did not get all sentimental over Ivory soap this week (see post below if you are confused)

When opening the cupboard door the entire door did not come off of the hinges and fall to the floor. Said door is not still sitting on the counter ready to be fixed.

An entire bottle of blue paint (thank goodness it was washable kids paint) did not spill all over the toy room floor. One child who will remain nameless did not step in the paint and track it all over the kitchen.

I did not pack all of our clothes in a rubbermaid tote rather than suitcases for our weekend away. It was just so much easier that hauling a bunch of suitcases!!

Check back later tonight or tomorrow and I'll have hockey updates, pictures and video of the past 2 weekends hockey tournaments for the boys!!

A stinky hockey player is a good hockey player

I walked into the high school hockey locker room this evening to help Nick get his gear for his tournament this weekend. I opened the door and was just about knocked over by the smell. I swear that my eyes were watering by the time we left the locker room and I have never packed gear up so fast in my life.

Eric asked me why I was breathing funny while packing the hockey bag (I was breathing through my mouth and not my nose trying to reduce the smell coming at me). I told him that it really stunk and I didn't want to smell it.

Eric's reply...

"Mom you have to smell bad when you play hockey. That means that you are a good player because you work hard and sweat and that's what makes you smell."

I guess he told me didn't he?!

That's Not George Washington!!

Eric had a music program at school yesterday. Grandpa came in to watch Nick who was home sick and I took Ty and his friend "Z" to the program.

The program was a presidents day theme so at the beginning they had a man dressed up as George Washington come on stage to sing the National Anthem. Well, Ty took one look "George" and his pointy hat and yelled, "Run 'Z' there is a pirate on the stage!!". I never had thought of George Washington as looking like a pirate, but I suppose to a 4 year old the pointy hat and costume would look like a pirate. So for the rest of the music program Ty and 'Z' were looking under the chairs for crocodiles and doing other pirate related things.

The kids were getting antsy so towards the end of the program we were standing in the back of the auditorium so they could move around a bit. The door opens behind us and a teacher dressed up like Abraham Lincoln walks down the aisle to the stage. Looks kids it's Abraham Lincoln - to which Ty responded "No its not mama that's Willy Wonka from the Chocolate Factory."

Out of the mouths of babes!!

Coloring Books & Ivory Soap

"Mom do you want to color with me?" Those words are music to my ears. Nick was sick AGAIN, second bought of strep and was home all day today. Late afternoon he asked me to color with him. I LOVE COLORING!! It's kind of a cheap therapy for me. He chose a coloring book from the general stack. I on the other hand went to my secret hiding place and got my OWN coloring book. The book that no one else in the house touches. Am I possessive about my coloring book? YES. Do I share it? NO. I know, I know I am trying to teach my kids to share and what kind of lesson am I teaching them by not sharing my coloring book right? Well, to justify why I don't share it - it is a princess coloring book and would be too "girly" for them anyway. So, Nick and I sat and colored for about an hour. At the end of our coloring session all my troubles were behind me and I was totally relaxed. I think I need to pull out my coloring book more often. Hmmmmmmmm, I wonder if Kurt would color with me?!

We ran to the store tonight to get some supplies. We were out of soap and shampoo. The boys and I smelled every shampoo bottle in the aisle to get the perfect smelling one. Then we moved on to the soap and the smelling started again. Have you ever noticed that every cleaning product has tons of fragrance in it now?? Well, on the bottom shelf there was a stack of plain old ivory soap. I LOVE IVORY SOAP. I grabbed it and threw it in the cart and couldn't wait to get home to take a shower.

Why am I so excited about Ivory soap? Well, the smell of it brings me back to my Grandma's house when I was little. She swore by Ivory soap and whenever you were in her bathroom you could smell it just like all of those fancy air fresheners we use today. Using ivory soap brings back such fun memories of sleepovers and play dates at her house and the fun we had. Ivory soap reminds me of the newspaper my brother and I made on her old typewriter during a snowstorm, of counting cars going down main street on a summer day on the front steps, of waiting patiently for the ground squirrel to come out of hiding with grandpa and his wrist rocket, of picking blueberries and going to the college tennis court, of learning how to make apple potica with grandma, of laying on the floor and learning to play marbles and all of the other warm memories that come to mind.

It's nice to have those memories and smells to hang on to as you grow older. So every time I shower with my Ivory soap I will think of my Grandma and Grandpa and how they could always bring a smile to my face.

Where have my babies gone???

Ok, this is kind of a whinny post - just a warning.

Yesterday I took Ty to his first non-family kid's birthday party where I just dropped him off and left until pick up time. For some reason as I drove away from the party I was REALLY sad. I know, I know - I'm being silly. But, it really hit me that my baby is growing up. First it's not needing mom at birthday parties, pretty soon it's school, then driving, then college - the list goes on and on.

Yes, I know that I am getting ahead of myself, but man do they have to grow up so fast?? As silly as it sounds there are some times where I would give anything for a crying infant in the middle of the night again that needed me for a snuggle in the rocking chair.

You would think that I would be used to this separation by now considering I have already been through it with both Nick and Eric, but it's still hard. And knowing that my final baby is growing up makes it worse.

Don't get me wrong, I love that my kids aren't in diapers and counting on me for 100% of their needs anymore but at the same time I really miss being the #1 thing in their lives.

It's funny though that even though they are growing away from me in steps it's seems like with each step away they do turn back for comfort a little more. Kind of the 1 step forward 2 steps back analogy. Even Nick who seems like Mr. Independent never and I mean never (even with his friends around) leaves me without a kiss, a hug and an I love you mom. Many times I get these things multiple times before he finally leaves. Even though Eric does not always like public displays of affection he still always snuggles every night before bed and loves to write notes to me that I find in the oddest places.

I suppose even when they are grown with families of their own they will still always be my babies.

Motherhood is hard - it is to decide forever to have a piece of your heart walk around outside of your body.

Not Me Monday!!

Welcome to Not Me! Monday! This blog carnival was created by MckMama. You can head over to her blog to read what she and everyone else have not been doing this week.

All three of our boys did not get strep throat! I am not down right tired of someone being sick in our house.

On Saturday we did not spend 10 straight hours at the hockey arena!! Who in their right mind would do that?! 10am cheerleading practice, 10:30-12 popsicle practice, 1-5:30 varsity games, 6-8 open skating!!

I did not almost lose our gold fish down the drain while trying to clean the fish tank this past week. Thank goodness our fish is too fat to fit down the drain holes!!

Ty and Raven did not fall asleep together on the floor last night. It doesn't get much cuter than a boy and his dog!!

Tyler did not put shampoo on my house plant that was "taking a shower" in the bathtub. I don't forget to water my plants and then when they are just about dead put them in the tub and let them take a shower for a few minutes to get hydrated again. And, to a 4 year old who hears that mommy is giving the plant a shower the logical thing would be to add soap!!

Well, that's all for this week. Take a look at the snow sculpture pics in the post below!!

Snow Sculptures

The Ely Winter Fest is in full swing. If you have a chance to come up to our neck of the woods I highly recommend doing so. The snow sculptures are fantastic and they have a great art walk around town. Check it out online at http://www.elywinterfest.com/

Eric, Ty and I went to the park this evening to check out the sculptures. My photos do not do justice to the amazing sculptures that the artists created.

On the hunt for whopper fish...

Sunday we all headed for the fish house to try and catch some trout. Well, the boys tried to catch trout - I read a book...

We didn't catch anything, but had fun anyway.

The boys spent hours outside riding the snowmobile. They cruised the lake, visiting their fishing buddies in the other houses and having a blast.

Hockey, Hockey, Hockey

Now that everyone is finally healthy in our house again I have time to sit down and post an update.
Last weekend since the JV hockey team did not have a game like the Varsity did Kurt decided to have them scrimmage the PeeWee youth hockey team.

Somehow Nick convinced Kurt to let him skate the game. My little man was so excited to be skating with the high school team in a game. He got to wear a high school jersey and even scored the first goal for the JV team. Needless to say he was not fit to talk to after the event - Mr. Hockey was out in full force!!

Eric and Ty got their school spirit on for the Varsity game. The cheerleaders painted their faces and they got to hold the puck that the team busts through before the game starts.

Ty, Nella & Eric wearing high school jerseys and waiting for the players to bust through the puck

And then, Ty in true fashion promptly fell asleep on meme's lap during the starting lineups and slept through the entire game!!
